Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away as a Carnival barker at the age of an infant and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. Her school was closed in two years in order to study acting. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. Following a short stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return home to the United States and quit her position. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first ever permanent acting job. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
